ABOUT MY WORK
Below is a compilation of some of the work I have completed over the course of the last few years while a student at University of Western States. I believe it is an excellent showcase of my experience. I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with you and/or your teams.
MENTAL SKILLS TRAINING
This was one of the most fun yet demanding courses I took over the course of the program. In addition to researching and writing the weekly modules, we also had to apply our work in a real setting. I was fortunate the Singapore women's 7's rugby team was able to fit me in on a weekly basis over the course of 10 weeks, as opposed to my usual every other week or monthly attendance. I refer to this extensive set of exercises and research almost monthly with my athletes as well as corporate employees. I learned to create valuable and meaningful 30 minutes sessions with the team from the modules. Incorporating theory as well as exercises that they could apply and subsequently use in training and game situations. I also learned that I needed to be more flexible when it came to these sessions as it never was quite perfect.
POSITIVE LEADERSHIP
Positive leadership has a place on and off the field and has the potential to truly excite and motivate individuals to achieve goals. All my papers are proof that with the right style of leadership, we can be better leaders and develop high performing employees or athletes.
Throughout the course of the program I used the head coach of the women’s rugby program as a focal point for many discussion forums and was finally able to sit down and interview her for a final project in my Positive Leadership course. Working on this project as well as my time with Wing Shao over the years, I learned that it is ok to sit back and listen to what the players were saying or trying to say. I also learned, that despite living and working in an authoritarian culture, the players still engaged and performed at a much higher level when their needs were met (autonomy, competence and connectedness).
Using common language that speaks to another person’s heart and creating a shared purpose inspires and motivates people to come together. It has helped to change how I engage and work with culturally diverse groups by developing my patience and my heart. This research proved to me that society can have a positive impact on sport as it did in South Africa in 1995. I found it was interesting to complete this course in the spring of 2019 only to have the Springboks go on to win the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan in October!

MOTIVATION
I am passionate around the driving forces of individual motivation and this project helped me link SDT (self determination theory) and identity formation, specifically using local cultural examples. I learned there is a strong link between our health and following our personal values and goals. When we live in a space outside were we want to be it creates ill-being. Yet, for some, this is also a comfort zone, one that requires very little effort. Encouraging and inspiring individuals to follow their hopes and dreams to create the positive life they want is very important to me. This course was very personal to me and came at a time of great change in my life.

CULTURE AND SPORT
An interesting project that made me aware of the fact that I had created some negative biases before having done any proper research to understand Lacrosse and the differences between how men and women played the sport. It was a humbling experience and one for which I learned so much about myself, not just Lacrosse. Rather than create stories in my mind, I now ensure I look on with curiosity and then go the next step and researching questions I may have with regards to a specific subject. This is very relevant considering my career path as a CMPC (certified mental performance consultant) and ensuring I do not create biases with clients that will negatively impact our collaboration.
